At the beginning of March, Surrey County Council's "Cabinet" (their top level committee) decided to look for community support in running 11 of their libraries. Warlingham Library was one of these. Surrey said that they would continue to provide the building, IT, and stock while they would want the community to take on responsibility for staffing. Warlingham Parish Council discussed this idea and agreed to express its opposition, both because it felt that libraries required the economies of scale that only a large organisation such as the County Council can provide and also because it felt that it would not be practical to use volunteer staffing. However, the Parish Council believes that the Library provides an important service to the community and that it should continue. Accordingly it is asking if anyone feels that they could provide some unpaid support, perhaps just for one three or four hour session a week, that they should record their possible availability with the clerk of the Council (Gina Caunt, 26 Leazes Avenue, Chaldon, CR3 5AH, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Should there be enough support by the end of April, a meeting will be organised to see what the best way forward might be. More information about Surrey County Council's proposals can be found on their website.
